Our Comic Creator Workshop sessions are online, monthly events for Creators Workshop members. We focus on unique topics geared toward helping comic creators achieve their personal best.
Details about our next three Comic Creator Workshop sessions are below. We hope you’ll join us!
Dynamics Part 1: In-Panel Dynamics
ANDY SCHMIDT: Jack Kirby set the gold standard for dynamics in American comics–and he did almost all of it in standard grid pattern pages–creating dynamic artwork entirely within the confines or traditionally shaped and sized panels. Andy discusses the illustration work of Jack Kirby and how his work differed from his contemporaries and pushed the boundaries of what cartoonists could accomplish within the four walls of a comic book panel.
Dynamics Part 2: Panel Composition and Layout
ANDY SCHMIDT: Neal Adams took what Kirby did inside the panel, and applied it directly to the layout and composition of the page itself, creating more complex and yes, more dynamic page layouts and compositions. Andy discusses the evolution, benefits and potential pitfalls of layout composition and how to use it to punch up your visual storytelling.
Dynamics Part 3: Storytelling and Visual Dynamics
ANDY SCHMIDT: Along with how the art is composed within the panels and how the panels themselves are composed, there’s also dynamics in the ebb and flow of your story. Andy discusses the use of page turns, splash panels, and other visual narrative devices that both writers and artists can use to punch up their dynamics!
If you want to make comics, write, draw, letter, and color comics, or improve as a comics creator, you’ll find like-minded friends and colleagues in our online workshops and courses. We hope to see you there!
