NYCC 2013 – Comics Experience Report

nycc-2011-logoNYCC 2013 was another great convention for Comics Experience folks!

In particular, we had our largest “in-person” Meet-Up ever, with Comics Experience instructors, pros, alums, and Workshop members taking over the entire back area of Mulligan’s on Saturday night.

There were so many comic creators present that we had multiple requests for name tags in the future.

Plus, we had Workshop members and alums from all over the world, including Australia, Brazil, Portugal, the exotic land of Canada, and from all over the United States. In many cases, it was a first “face-to-face” meeting for people who have known each other for years via our Creators Workshop online community.

Comics Experience friends included: Amy Chu, Andy Schmidt, Angela Allen, Antonio Brandao, Billy Yurkas, Bobby Curnow, Brandon Seifert, Carlos Felipe, Curtis Lawson, DaFu Yu, Dan Rivera, Eric Drumm, Erik Korsgaard, George O’Connor, Heidi Ward, James Babbo, J.D. Oliva, Jeremy Melloul, John Friscia, Joshua Williamson, Ken Perry, Kevin Byrne, Kyle Higgins, Matt Yocum, Mike Costa, Nick DeDual, Nic Shaw, Paul Allor, Rob Anderson, Sean Flahaven…and that doesn’t even include the guests of members who joined us, from spouses to creative collaborators!

We also had many members, instructors, and alums exhibiting and/or signing during the convention, including: Amy Chu, Chris Sotomayor, DaFu Yu, Jeff Marsick, Joe Sergi, Nick Dedual, Nick Spencer, Richard Clark, Rich Douek, Rob Anderson, Robert Atkins, Shaun Noel, and Vito Delsante.

It was great seeing everyone and we’re already looking forward to next year!

(And if you’re a comic creator looking to improve your craft, learn about the industry, and connect with a like-minded community of creators, make sure to check out our Creators Workshop, for all those days between the cons!)

CE alum Rich Douek’s “Wailing Blade” announced at NYCC 2013!

Wailing-Blade-Rich-Douek-promoCE alum and Creators Workshop member Rich Douek has a new mini-series coming…and it sounds like heads will roll…

As announced by publisher ComixTribe at NYCC 2013, Wailing Blade: Headtaker will be launching in 2014, with story by Rich and art by Charlie Cody.

Wailing Blade: Headtaker explores earth’s distant future — a strange new world of lost technology, strange creatures and desperate men. The mini-series will tell the story of the Headtaker, a merciless executioner in the employ of a tyrant.

In the press release announcing the series, Douek said, “Wailing Blade takes place in the far, far future, where civilization has risen and fallen a hundred times over. What little technology that survived the millennia is very rare, even less understood. The executioner’s mask and weapon are artifacts of an earlier time, when man had greater mastery over technology. There are few who understand its true purpose, least of all our hero, Tychon.”

Rich is also the writer of Gutter Magic, a fantasy series set in a world in which World War II was fought with magic. The #1 issue of Gutter Magic is currently available for digital download on comiXology.

Congrats to Rich and Charlie on the announcement of Wailing Blade!

“Guitar Phantasy” created by FOUR CE alums & Workshop members

guitar-phantasy-panelsA new comic from Moonrise Comics, called Guitar Phantasy, was created by an entire team of Comics Experience alums and Creators Workshop members! The book made its recent debut at St. Louis’s Project Comic Con.

Guitar Phantasy is written by CE alum Tim Bach (Gargoyle By Moonlight), illustrated by CE art alum Carl Peterson (MAD Magazine), with colors by CE alum Robt Snyder, and letters by CE Workshop member E.T. Dollman. It also features a cover by Silvio dB.

The 11-page full color comic book has been called a rock and roll fairy tale mash-up of Scott Pilgrim and Tolkien, by way of Zeppelin.

Guided by the odd little shopkeeper of a second-hand music store, Kev discovers an incredible guitar and uncovers the power of music and the untapped force inside of himself. But when the devourer of all things, a wicked-looking, music-hating demon appears, can Kev play fast enough, hard enough to defeat the demon?

You can check out a preview of the book right here.

You can also purchase a print copy at Indy Planet or a digital copy at Drive-Thru Comics!

Congrats to Tim, Carl, Robt, and E.T.!
