Master Seminar with James Tynion IV: Writing Team or Ensemble Cast Comics
James Tynion IV (Justice League, Detective Comics) is ready to divulge the secret tricks to writing dynamic, exciting team books!
Writing team books, or any comic with a large ensemble cast can be daunting. How do you give every character their due issue-by-issue, arc by arc, without losing focus on the story you’ve set out to tell? How do you even begin to choose the right types of character for your team, without leaning into stereotypes thus boring your reader?
James Tynion IV has made his career writing team and ensemble books in Gotham City, The Hall of Justice, and worlds of his own creation. He’s ready to share secrets and tricks of the trade he’s learned over the years. When you take the class, come prepared for a Q&A at the end of the day.
If you’ve ever wondered how to write a team book, this is the class for you!

Do I need to know a whole lot about comics?
Absolutely not. This is a course about creating and writing comics. It’s an in-depth discussion, but we strive to make sure that our conversational tone is inclusive to our wide range of attendees’ experience.
Do I need to be a computer wiz for the class?
No, but you do need to have high-speed Internet access. We recommend that you have headphones with a microphone to plug into your computer, but that’s by no means necessary.
What if I can’t attend at the last minute? Can I make it up?
This is a one-time master seminar so there is no way to make it up, but if you have enrolled, you will have access to a recording of the session for two weeks after it’s held to review as many times as you like!
What computer programs do I need for this course?
None at all. Though we will talk about some programs, you’re not going to be asked to use any of them during the seminar.
If I don’t live in North America, can I still take the course?
You bet. We’ve had students jump in from Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and Africa. Many of these students have not been able to attend live due to the time difference, but they’ve all been happy to view the recordings!
If I don’t want a career in comics, and just like making comics or even just want to learn more about the art form I love, is the Master Seminar right for me?
Sure it is! This seminar is a great way to learn a ton about comics, how they’re made, and the thought process behind them. It could really change the way you read comics—for the better. We’d love to have you!
