Writing and Editing Testimonials

Tom Brevoort

Executive Editor, Marvel Comics

“When he was a member of my editorial team, I used to call Marc Sumerak ‘The Mechanic’ for the way he’d get his hands dirty in fine-tuning the engine of whatever story we were working on, and his detail-oriented approach to his work.”

Tod Pleasant

“I sat down today to start a script and it soon stuck me how much of what I was doing has been influenced by the Intro to Writing class. I just wanted to say thanks, and that I look forward to coming back for the Advanced Writing.”

Chris Sotomayor

Colorist

“As a comic book professional, I’ve seen a lot of editors come and go in this industry. I have to say, Marc is the kind of editor you want to work with. He’s not a simple ‘traffic manager’ who plays sudoku between crises. Marc works with people. He works with creators. He knows how to get the best out of you, and push you to the next plateau and nurture your talent and the project in ways you wouldn’t have thought of. He’s always a seamless part of the team. And that’s what you want. A teammate. Not someone who rubber-stamps or passes the buck. You want someone looking out for you. That’s Marc. This motherf****** just knows comics.”

Adam Davis

“Thank you very much for the critiques. All of them make a lot of sense and are good catches. I’ve had a blast in these three classes and I look forward to growing as a writer in the workshop.

Thank you again for the awesome experience. Very glad I found Comics Experience.”

Frank Gogol

Comic Book Writer

“Paul gets comic book writing craft. He understands the effects and the mechanisms involved in great storytelling and can articulate what’s not working in a story and why. More importantly, though, Paul possesses a natural ability to identify these things in his students’ scripts and to offer clear, actionable feedback that elevates those students’ storytelling abilities. Some people are great writers. Some people are great teachers. Paul is both.”

Devon Wong

“Joe is extremely well-versed in law for comic book creators, from its history to the myriad practical aspects that all creators should know if they’re hoping to work in the industry, and even if they already do. There are so many legal dimensions to comic book creation, from contracts with collaborators and publishers to registering copyright and trademark, and creators need to become familiar with all of it. I came out of the course with a number of new tools at my disposal and an awareness of the complexity and scope of the laws and protections pertinent to comic book creation. I’m already applying my new knowledge of contracts in my collaborations. Joe himself is an experienced and well-organized teacher who is able to make incredibly complicated material easy to understand. The contracts provided by Joe are alone well worth the price of admission. I would highly recommend that other creators take this course. It may be daunting, but it will pay off. And I’m incredibly grateful that I won’t have to learn about law for comic book creators the hard way!”

Jason White

Senior Creative Writer

“Since Paul has written for Marvel, IDW and AfterShock and has self-published several comic book limited series, he has a current and in-depth knowledge of what it takes to be a writer in comics today.  He’s able to translate that into his critiques of your work in a way that’s easy to understand and doesn’t interfere with or alter your own creative vision. He was great to learn from and helped me take my writing to a higher level. I honestly can’t wait to take another course with him. “

Russ Gartz

“Before I took the “Introduction to Comics Writing” course through Comics Experience, the only thing I knew how to do was read a comic book.  But after the course, wow!  I can write a script!  I had a great time and the course is a great value!”

Joe Cuddy

“I just wanted to thank you again for our classes, particularly the Intro to Comic Book Writing from last fall. The script I developed there was accepted for publication by FutureQuake Press in the UK. I know you’ve got alumni who’ve written for Marvel and DC, so that might not seem like a big deal, but it is for me. Having the script I wrote for class become my first published work was the best case scenario from the outset, and I’d just like to thank you for your part in it. It literally wouldn’t have happened without you and Comics Experience.”

Elisa Westmore

“I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to write comics someday. Andy offers wisdom and insight not only into the writing process, but into the industry itself. I really feel like I learned a lot, and the practical component of writing and critquing was invaluable.”
