Comics Experience’s Paul Allor is Writing Clue!

At Emerald City Comic Con, Comics Experience‘s Paul Allor surprised fans – and us! – with the news that he will be penning IDW’s new five-issue Clue miniseries along with artist Nelson Dániel! Based on the classic board game, this tale of murder and mystery freshens up some familiar faces – Mrs. White now works as a Senator instead of a maid, and Miss Scarlet seems to have traded her vamp aesthetic for pop star glam right out of Jem and the Holograms.

“IDW has a long-standing relationship with Hasbro, the owner of Clue. The idea of a possible Clue comic was something they cooked up together. Then IDW editor Carlos Guzman came to me about pitching an idea for it! Needless to say, I absolutely jumped at the chance,” Paul says.

Although he’s worked with licensed properties before, most notably G.I. Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Paul found that board game adaptations come with their own unique challenges – and storytelling rewards.

“This is the first time I’ve been in on developing a licensed property from the ground floor, and… the nearly limitless potential [of the original board game] really added to that. The elements of Clue are well-known: the main characters, an array of weapons, a big mansion,” he says

“But within that framework, IDW and Hasbro have given artist Nelson Dániel and I extraordinary narrative freedom. I’m not gonna lie: my pitch contained some weird stuff, and some stuff I thought they’d almost surely say no to. But instead everyone was all in from the jump. The result will be a comic that honors the franchise’s roots and its history, while also tapping into the comics medium, resulting in a wild, wacky comic that could truly only be told in comics form.”

Paul credits his creative partner with bringing his bizarre world to vivid life.

“Nelson is so perfect for this — such a great blend of excellent character work, masterful control of the mood and exquisitely detailed backgrounds,” he says. “The communication on this project has been great, and the heart of our working relationship is basically Nelson sending amazing art, and me whooping for joy.”

We’re looking forward to seeing what surprises Paul has in store for us!
