Source Point Press, Team SLUG, and Amy Chu at Comicpalooza!

Comics Experience is headed to Houston’s own Comicpalooza again this year – and this year, we’ve got more friends showing up! From May 25 through 27, Andy Schmidt, Ben Goldsmith, Levi McIntire, and others will be set up at the Source Point Press booth!

Aspiring creators should stop by to talk to the team about publishing, Comics Experience courses, the Creators Workshop, and pick up a book or four!

Andy’s portfolio reviews will take place at the booth from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on both Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26, and from 12:55 p.m. to 4:55 p.m. on Sunday, May 27. You can also stop by and have Frank Gogol sign your copy of his anthology Grief, as one of the first four books in the Comics Experience and Source Point team up.

If you’d like to learn more about the relationship between Source Point Press and Comics Experience, stop by panel room 8 (room 371B) on May 26 for a discussion between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Hear what we’re all about and feel free to ask us questions about our partnership!

In addition, Comics Experience creators Kevin Lintz and Shannon Thomas will be bringing their all-ages comic, Team SLUG, to Texas’ biggest city.

Team SLUG was born out of the two collaborators’ longtime friendship, mutual love of comics, and a desire to move from consumers to creators. The comic is an all-ages story about slugs versus hedgehogs in an epic WWII battle.

After seven conventions, Kevin and Shannon have their booth down to a science. They decorate with camouflage netting, ammo crates, grenades, and oversized standup figures of their main characters. The two also dress in army fatigues adorned with patches they created for the Team SLUG comics. People are drawn into the booth with the promise of frees stickers, a great comic, and a chance to hold a defused grenade.

Shannon has taken the Intro to Writing class and Kevin has taken Intro to Writing and the Lettering and Production class. All the issues were workshopped in the Comics Experience forum.

Team SLUG Vol. 1 is a collection of the first four issues along with a backup story, character sketches, and homage covers. It is available on Amazon and at their booth at Comicpalooza.

Comics Experience alum Amy Chu (Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death, Red Sonja, KISS) will be in attendance as a featured guest. Make sure to stop at her booth, say hello, and buy some comics! She will also be taking part in the Working with Non-Superhero Licenses in Comics panel on Sunday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in panel room 3 (room 371B). Celebrated comic book creators Joe Eisma, Matt Frank, and Sara Richards are participating as well.

We look forward to seeing you in Houston! Don’t forget your bug spray.
