Legends of Oz: Tik-Tok and the Kalidah on Sale in April!

tik-tok-kalidah

Issue #1 of Legends of Oz: Tik-Tok and the Kalidah, penned by Rob Anderson and featuring art by Renato Rei, will be hitting your local comic book stores on April 6! You may have seen this three-issue Aspen Comics/Big Dog Ink miniseries listed in the February Previews on page 291.

Tik-Tok and the Kalidah infuses steampunk and western sensibilities into L. Frank Baum’s iconic fantasy land of Oz. It follows the adventures of a delightful clockwork cop and his silent, powerful brother-in-arms, a Kalidah ousted from his family. They find themselves at odds with some familiar figures from the original stories, including the Munchkins and some flying simians in the service of a certain viridian villainess…

“In Big Dog Ink’s ‘Wicked West’ universe, the characters of classic Oz are recast as Western heroes and villains. So, the idea I pitched was Tik-Tok, the clockwork ‘one-man army,’ and an exiled Kalidah partnering up as bounty hunters in the Wild West of Oz,” Rob says.

“I wrote the full script for the first issue and an outline for the mini-series back in January of 2014, but my own change of work circumstances in the interim meant that Keith Thomas helped out by scripting the last two issues.”

Rob also attributes the positive, supportive environment of the Creators Workshop as crucial in the development of Tik-Tok and the Kalidah… and his creativity in general.

“None of the comics I’ve written — from my creator-owned books like Creature Cops, to work-for-hire like My Little Pony — would have been possible without what I learned from Comics Experience, and from honing my craft at the Creators Workshop,” he says. “To this day, when I face the blank page, I think about things Andy Schmidt taught me, and I still pretty much outline and script issues using Andy’s approach.”
